By Location in Washington
- Olympic Peninsula: Anything on the peninsula in the national park or national forest
- North Cascades: Within and outside the national park, anything along SR-542 or SR-20, near Bellingham, Newhalem, Marblemount, Mazama, Winthrop
- Glacier Peak Wilderness: That area in the middle of the Cascades, south of North Cascades proper and north of Mountain Loop Highway, but as far east as Lake Chelan
- Mountain Loop: Including Boulder River Wilderness, anything along the highway from Granite Falls to Darrington, east of Everett
- Alpine Lakes Wilderness: Spanning between Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest but within US-2 and I-90, between Seattle and Leavenworth, Wenatchee, Cle Elum
- Teanaway: Area outside of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness by Cle Elum
- Rainier: Anything within the national park or just off the highway
By Major Highway in Washington
- US Route 101: Coastal highway that starts along the north coast of the olympic peninsula and loops to the Pacific Coast
- State Route 542: Bellingham to Mt Baker access, North Cascades
- State Route 20: North Cascades thru highway, closed in winter
- Mountain Loop Highway: Technically part of North Cascades, but only loops through a portion on the west side of the crest, connects to SR-20 by way of SR-530
- US Route 2: Everett to Leavenworth, often with westbound Sunday afternoon traffic
- Interstate-90: Seattle to Boston! or Cle Elum and Spokane, Sunday afternoon traffic westbound loosens after Snoqualmie Pass
- State Route 706: Southern Mt Rainier highway that passes Paradise and Longmire
By Type
- Hiking: Day trips, mostly hiking, some with minor scrambles
- Backpacking: Overnight trips, non-technical or easy scrambles
- Scrambling: Any trip with scrambling even if a side trip
- Mountaineering: Requiring some mountaineering skills, steep snow, scrambling, etc…
- Skiing: Any backcountry adventure involving skis
- Backcountry: Day or overnight trips with route finding due to snow or off trail travel
By Season
By Travel Destination (outside Washington)
- Desert: Places that aren’t mountainous outside of Washington (i.e. Joshua Tree)
- Coastal: Beachy trips (and horses!)
- Southeast Asia: Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam
- Europe: Everything travel in Europe including Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Slovenia and more
- Alps: A specific subgroup for European mountain adventures
- Canada: Trips in British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon. Including backpacking and skiing
